What You Need To Know About Asphalt Roofing

Asphalt roofing is a popular type of roofing material. It comes as shingles like many other roofing options, and the asphalt refers to the actual material used to coat the shingle.

 

There are two common types of asphalt shingles. One common type is the glass fiber asphalt shingle. This type of shingle is formed from a glass mat to give the shape of a shingle, and it is then coated with asphalt to add the waterproof layer. This is necessary to keep rain and other precipitation from leaking through your roof and damaging underlying structures.


The other type of shingle used in asphalt roofing is the organic asphalt shingle. This type is a felt mat that is dipped into asphalt for the waterproofing. The difference between the two is that organic asphalt contains 40% asphalt, making it more durable and longer lasting. Organic asphalt is also heavier, so it is less likely to be blown off with strong winds.

 

Asphalt shingles contains ceramic granules that resemble glass. These granules are used to extend the lifespan of the shingles by reflecting the sun away from the roof. The harsh sun can be very damaging to asphalt, so these reflective ceramic granules are a great asset to asphalt roofing.

 

An asphalt roof tends to last approximately 20 years, though they tend to last longest in cooler climates. A nice perk of an asphalt roof is that it can be repaired rather than just replaced. Individual shingles can be added or replaced if they have blown off or been damaged.

 

Asphalt shingles are a popular and inexpensive option for your new roof. It comes in many different colors and shapes to fit your style and preference. It is also a durable choice. Asphalt roofing is certainly a type of roofing to consider when you’re on the hunt for your new roof, as there are several reasons it is currently the most popular choice of shingles.

Gerry Donaghue, our founder, started this business out of his house formerly in Nashua, NH and has sustained a quality business over the years through hard work and resilience. We have navigated fluctuations in the industry across the years with some years only allowing for a few members on our crew and some calling for multiple crews and larger partnerships. The one thing that hasn’t changed? Gerry’s commitment to high standard work and building relationships with the folks he serves. A family owned business, his daughter Ashley supports him on his admin team (after she did her time driving the dump truck for him as a teenager!), his brother Andrew works on the job site, and his wife Pat has always been there to help when needed-you can sometimes see her in the office or even at a home show! Gerry has a wealth and variety of experience ranging from ground up new builds, additions and interior remodels, deck installations, siding replacements and installations, and of course his favorite-metal roofing installations.
