Helpful Tips for Replacing Your Roof During Cold Weather

Your roof is one of the most important components of your home. It is responsible for protecting your family from the elements, including cold weather, rain, ice and snow. While maintenance is the best way to keep your roof in good shape, it is important to remember that roof replacement will still be necessary sometimes. Check out these tips for replacing it during the winter months.

Protect Your Roof From Snow and Ice Buildup

Avoid using flat designs when you install new roofing. This makes it difficult for winter snow and ice to slide from your roofing. When it builds up, the extra weight can damage your roof. During a particularly bad winter, it might even cause holes or cause it to cave in completely. The material you use is also important. Metal dissipates snow and ice quickly but could be dangerous to people if it slides off quickly near a door. Asphalt is another good option because of its ability to insulate your home. Finally, slate is durable enough to hold up to snow as well as spring hail.

Ensure Quality Installation to Keep Energy Costs Low

When installing new roofing, it is important to ensure your roofing contractor provides high-quality roof replacement. Professional installation means your home will be better insulated and therefore better protected for the cold weather outside. Energy-efficient, well-sealed and properly sized roofing means better performance, which means you will not need to turn your thermostat as high to keep your interior space comfortable.

Avoid Replacing Roofing in the Winter if Possible

Unless it is an emergency, try to avoid replacing your roof during the winter months. Snow and ice can make it quite slippery and difficult to work on, not to mention dangerous. Additionally, installing a new roof during wet conditions may cause adhesives to freeze before they’ve done their job. If you are installing shingles as your roofing material, they may snap during the process. If you must replace your roofing during the winter, try to do so on warmer, dry days. Always stick to the manufacturer’s temperature recommendations.

Whether you decide to conquer roof replacement during the summer months or after the weather has turned cold, always research first. Search for a company that is experienced not only in replacement but in replacement during icy, wet or cold conditions. Always verify the company’s license as well as the employees’ experience. Online reviews are another good way to determine which local companies are the best for your job.
