Asphalt shingles are one of the most common roofing materials. They are cost effective and can usually be installed faster than other options. Single thickness shingles are the standard product. The surface resembles sand, and it can last more than 25 years. Less common are architectural asphalt shingles. Their surface is textured, which can give it a more vibrant color and mimic other, more costly materials. They can be more expensive than the standard product and may have a lifespan closer to 15 to 20 years. 

Wood shingles can be made from a variety of species, from cedar and redwood to southern pine. They are sawn or split and are applied individually. Due to the increased time and labor needed for installation, they may cost twice as much as asphalt shingles. While the average lifespan is about 20 years, under moderate weather conditions, they may last much longer.

Metal roofing systems have gained popularity in residential and commercial roofing applications. They may be installed as individual shingles or manufactured as vertical lengths, joined with solder. These roofs can be more than twice as expensive as wood but may last up to 80 years.

Tile, cement and slate are very heavy. Depending on the roof, structural reinforcement may be necessary. These materials can be several times more expensive than asphalt or wood, but with proper maintenance, they can last more than a century.
